Deep Space Communication Using the DSOC System From NASA

The aim of NASA to revolutionize its deep space communication hit a new groundbreaking achievement. The latest update concerning the so-called Deep Space Optical Communications system from NASA is on the good side. The recent test went successfully in communicating with a spacecraft on its mission. The idea is to refresh the communication method in space that previously relied on radio wave technology.

Successful Contact with Psyche Spacecraft

It is great news concerning communication in space for future missions. The successful test involved the Psyche spacecraft on its mission to study an asteroid in space. The spacecraft aims to reach and study a unique metal asteroid orbiting right between Jupiter and Mars. That was the perfect moment for NASA to test its newly developed method of communicating with a spacecraft on an active mission in space.

The mission itself started on October 13, 2023, to study the so-called metal asteroid. NASA uses the chance while the spacecraft is out there in space to test out its DSOC system. The test of this new communication method took place on November 14, 2023. It involves laser signal firing since this deepspace communication system uses that type of signal to communicate.

Longer Distance Communication Testing

The groundbreaking result is there after the successful reception of the laser signal fired from the spacecraft targeting the ground stations at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory of NASA. Since the signal was successfully received, it marks the first successful communication with a spacecraft orbiting in space with this newly developed laser signal-based communication system. Of course, the system has been previously tested at a closer distance. Either in the Earth’s orbit or the moon’s distance the tests are all successful.

Better Space Communication in The Future

With successful communication over a longer distance than before using this new DSOC system from NASA, it gets closer to its incorporation in future missions. It means that in the future astronauts can rely on their communication with the ground stations using this method instead of the old one. In other words, the course of this deep space communication method testing can affect the future of space communication.

More Tests to Come

Undoubtedly, data transmission speed increase is among the crucial targets for NASA concerning the DSOC system. At the moment, engineers of NASA continue to test and refine the DSOC system with possible future testing. It is also possible to contact the Psyche aircraft again for another testing of this deep space communication method since it will be there in about 29 months.
