A Brain-Reading Technology: A Big Hope for Paralyzed People

Being paralyzed is a stressful condition. A paralyzed person is not only difficult to move but also talking about what they want, especially if they are unable to speak.

Luckily researchers finally released a brain-reading technology. It helps people who are unable to speak to express what they want because of this technology. Learn more about this technology below.

The Way a Brain Reading Technology Works to Help Disabled People

This technology is claimed to help disabled people. They can’t only able to express something they want to say but also move their paralyzed body parts. In a research study, researchers placed some electrodes on the surface of the brain.

Most electrodes were placed on the top of the brain that control the body, face, and larynx. Then, the researchers asked the participants to think of certain words. The brain will send the words through the electrodes.

The electrodes convert the imagination words into text. During this experiment, the researchers also prepared a large screen with an avatar that was similar to the participant. Surprisingly, this technology transforms the words from the brain into the real word through the avatar. As a result, people understand what the paralyzed person wants.

The Ability of This Brain-Reading Technology

The main ability of this brain-reading technology is to convert words from the brain into real words. The avatar will speak as a normal person speaks. Previously, this technology could only transfer speech to text at 78 words per minute.

The researchers keep working to improve this ability. Nowadays, the system of this technology can convert speech to text up to 150 words per minute. It is a great achievement since it is similar to the speaking speed of a normal person.

The researchers also designed this device to speak with the voices of the users. The idea is to increase the realistic sense of the device when hearing it. At the same time, the voice makes the user happy since it feels that they are speaking.

It Helps Paralyzed People to Move their Body Again

The launch of a Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) gives new hope to paralyzed people. The developers of this device explain that in the future, BCI can’t only help people who are unable to speak but also paralyze people to move their bodies again. The idea is to connect between the brain and spinal cord.

The function of the spinal cord is to stimulate the nerves. Imagine if it can stimulate the nerves of the legs. It means that brain-reading technology helps paralyzed people to walk again!
